Out In The Streets

Some people call the type of photography I do for WWD 'street photography'. I always say that 'street style photography' is not exactly the same thing as propper
'street photography'. Garry Winogrand, William Klein, Bruce Gilden, Joel Meyerowitz and likes are street photographers. What we do for the fashion magazines and the blogs does indeed sometimes require the same kind of skill, but in the end it's entirely different thing.

So I went to Jeu de Paume to see Garry Winogrand's retrospective.
It's so full of strong images and so intense that it's almost hard to watch.

One of the photos in the exhibition is obviously a famous shot of a couple holding little chimpanzees on their hands.
In one of the 'memorabilia boxes' containing objects like contact sheets and Winogrand's hand-written notes there is a small print of a Tos Papageorge's photo depicting Winogrand taking that chimpanzee shot. I've never seen it before. Seeing this situation saute tells so much about his method of work and about transforming random to amazing.
